Park Lane Mall Refurbishment, Meadowhall
Meadowhall, one of only six super-regional shopping centres in the UK, provides approximately 1.4 million sq ft of prime retail and leisure space on the site of a former steelworks, attracting over 25 million visitors annually.
The Brief
Meadowhall, one of only six super-regional shopping centres in the UK, provides approximately 1.4 million sq ft of prime retail and leisure space on the site of a former steelworks, attracting over 25 million visitors annually. Working in collaboration with The Harris Partnership, who led the interior design, and appointed by British Land, BDP Lighting redesigned both feature and functional lighting elements to deliver a comprehensive, cohesive and high-quality lighting service across the mall.
The Challenge
Create a more engaging, dynamic and aspirational retail environment that works for tenants and customers alike, supporting a cohesive, high-quality visual experience throughout the scheme.
What we delivered
A carefully considered hierarchy of illumination, ranging from low-level pilaster lighting through to feature chandeliers and the illuminated roof structure, with contrasts and points of sparkle deliberately incorporated.
A series of eight bespoke chandelier installations distributed throughout the mall, with an additional feature at the upper-level entrance, each lit by precisely aimed narrow-beam LED projectors to create the impression of light cascading from the glazed roof, intricate luminous forms from afar, spiralling falling leaves up close.
Each chandelier comprises over 10,000 individually suspended components, polished stainless steel, clear and frosted acrylic, on ultra-fine wires, further enriched by approximately 20,000 clear crystals for reflectivity, sparkle and visual depth.
Giorgos joined the Park Lane refurbishment project at the technical design stage, supporting the delivery of a comprehensive lighting package for this major retail environment transformation. He was responsible for the production of detailed tender information, including coordinated lighting layouts, luminaire schedules, integration details, and specifications, ensuring alignment with the architectural and interior design vision developed in collaboration with The Harris Partnership. During the construction phase, Giorgos provided on-site support, contributing to the successful delivery of the scheme through attendance at site inspections, snagging, and commissioning activities. He worked closely with the specialist lighting controls contractor, advising on system implementation and ensuring that the lighting performance, control functionality, and overall design intent were fully realised within a complex and operational retail environment.
