BDP has developed a comprehensive masterplan for the Stockport Interchange, setting out a dynamic vision to support SMBC and TfGM in delivering an integrated regeneration of this key area of the town centre. The planning application has been successfully secured, with the project now progressing into RIBA Stage 3.
The Challenge
Integrate a major transport interchange with a new town-centre park, improved connectivity and new residential accommodation, contributing to the ongoing regeneration of Stockport town centre.
What we delivered
A £50m interchange providing high-quality passenger facilities alongside the creation of a major new town-centre park and new residential accommodation.
An approximately 10,000 sqm elevated park spanning the bus interchange, connecting to an enhanced riverside public realm, with a new pedestrian and cycle bridge linking the interchange to the railway station and the emerging commercial district.

Giorgos acted as Lead Lighting Designer for the Stockport Interchange project, a major transport-led regeneration scheme delivered in partnership with Stockport Council and Transport for Greater Manchester, providing a modern interchange integrated with public realm, active travel routes, and a landmark rooftop park. At RIBA Stage 2, he was responsible for developing the initial lighting concepts, producing design proposals that responded to the architectural and landscape vision, while coordinating closely with the wider multidisciplinary team. He presented these concepts to the client and key stakeholders, incorporating feedback to refine the design direction. At RIBA Stage 3, Giorgos led the development of a coordinated single-option solution, ensuring compliance with project-specific requirements and TfGM standards. He oversaw the production of the lighting design package for tender, delivering a fully integrated solution across architecture, landscape, and public realm elements, ensuring a coherent, robust, and buildable design aligned with the wider project objectives.
