The Brief
Dhaka, the rapidly developing capital of Bangladesh, is undergoing a major urban transformation driven by the introduction of a new metro network. Line 5 North comprises nine underground stations running east–west through the city centre, connecting key destinations of both historic and strategic importance, including the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, the central business district at Gulshan, and major transport hubs such as Gabtoli.
The Challenge
Deliver a design responsive to the cultural and climatic context of a complex and rapidly evolving city, combining global transport expertise with local knowledge across studios in Manchester, New Delhi and Dhaka, ensuring compliance with mandatory local standards while elevating design quality through UK best practice.
What we delivered
Led by BDP's transport architecture team, supported by specialist lighting, engineering and project management inputs.
High-quality lighting design packages for all public-facing areas of all nine stations, across both concept and detailed design, ensuring a consistent and coordinated approach across the network.
A comprehensive design criteria matrix combining mandatory local requirements with UK best-practice guidance, plus complete documentation, drawings, specifications and schematics, coordinated with electrical subconsultants in India to support fully integrated tender packages.
As Lead Lighting Designer across all nine stations, Giorgos was responsible for both concept and detailed design. He led the review and application of local standards, developed the design criteria matrix, and managed the production of complete lighting design documentation coordinated with the electrical subconsultants in India.
