The Brief

As the Society of Light and Lighting (SLL) representative for the North West, I actively support the professional development of the regional lighting community. My role involves organising and hosting technical events, seminars, site visits, as well as contributing to knowledge-sharing initiatives that align with SLL and CIBSE objectives. I engage with designers, engineers, manufacturers, and students to facilitate dialogue across the industry, promote best practice, and encourage continuous learning. This includes curating event content, coordinating speakers, and ensuring relevance to current industry challenges such as sustainability, light pollution, and emerging technologies.

Impact on the Regional Lighting Community

Through these activities, I help strengthen the local lighting network and create opportunities for collaboration and professional growth. The events provide a platform for sharing expertise, discussing innovations, and addressing sector-wide challenges. By supporting accessible, high-quality CPD and fostering connections between professionals at different career stages, the role contributes to elevating standards of lighting design and engineering across the region.

Value to My Professional Practice

This role enables me to stay closely connected to industry developments, thought leadership, and emerging trends, which directly informs my approach to design and project delivery. It also strengthens my engagement with the wider professional community, supporting a collaborative and informed approach to problem-solving. The insights gained through these interactions enhance my ability to contribute to projects with a broader perspective, while maintaining alignment with best practice and evolving industry standards.

Professional Engagement – CIBSE North West Committee

As a member of the CIBSE North West Committee, I contribute to a multidisciplinary group of professionals representing a broad range of engineering disciplines. This provides valuable insight into how lighting integrates with wider building services and encourages a more holistic approach to design. Through the committee, I engage with a programme of high-quality MEP-focused technical events and knowledge-sharing initiatives, supporting continuous professional development and cross-industry learning. The role also provides early awareness of emerging legislation and policy changes affecting the built environment, enabling a more informed and responsive approach within my field. In addition, participation in the committee offers the opportunity to contribute to the development of industry guidance and the promotion of best practice, helping to shape a coordinated and forward-looking engineering community.
